Natural Horsemanship

Location: Canada

More About Me: Well I suppose I fell in love with horses as soon as I knew what they were. At 6 I started vaulting and then started taking riding lessons, did pony club and some minor showing and then I found John Lyons. Ever since then I have been applying his methods as best I can with all my horses. I have also been barefoot trimming my horses for the past year. I am planning on training my first horse this year along with my sister. Should be a blast.

If you get frustrated during training, do you

Walk away from the horse and punch something solid?
Start getting mad at the horse?
Pull on your hair and scream?
Stop and take a couple of deep breaths then begin again?
Or put your horse away and try again tomorrow?

Hello Celena,
I have finally started getting to work with my boy, I have round penned him and today I worked with sacking out. I used anything from an old rag to a lime orange life jacket as well as the dreaded white plastic bag. I started of course with myself, rubbing/patting him everywhere, jumping up and down and the like. Then I chose the least scary/threatening item and worked my way up. He is such a smart boy, caught onto the process after the second or third item. I have also introduced him to the saddle and we are working to wards the goal, so far I am happy with the results. I will make an effort to get photos and possibly video of our sessions.

I hope this year has been good to you,
Angelica.

No I haven't, I will definately let you know how it goes when I start, I am hoping to get a warmer couple of days but we'll see :). I have to say what I like about John Lyons is he puts everything in a simple way that everyone can understand and follow and he has fun with his horses :D I think the biggest reason I started studying his method was because of the way his horses were, calm, respectful and willing not to mention all the things they did with minimal pressure from John. I thought I want my horses to be like that, who wouldn't ;)
I also wanted to say I am very glad this site was made, and that I found it.

Oh neat thanks, yeah I have a few horses that could be sold.

With commander I am first planning to start riding him and then start him with driving. I haven't trained a horse in either of those so it will be interesting. I will for sure keep you posted. We are in the process of building our round pen so it may be a while before I get started.

Hey! Just wanted to let you know that you won our contest for this week, with a prize of a free Super Fancy ad. It's fully transferable, so if you don't have a horse to sell, you're welcome to give it away.

Just email me and I'll email you back the coupon code. Thanks for getting involved!

You'll have to keep us posted on Commander's progress! What do you plan to do with him?

I used to be able to vault onto a horse at the canter while on a longe line. It is actually WAY easier than just trying to jump on your horse while it stands still if you use it's momentum to your favor! It took me a while to figure it out, and I was lucky enough to have a really patient horse :D

Hi,
thanks, sometimes I can't believe I own him. Commander will be my training project this year, should be very fun and challenging.

I am not currently doing vaulting, last summer me and some friends did it a bit but nothing major. A cantering vault is hard, lol, I have tried it a few times but was never really able to make it.

Well I am happy to have found this site.

Hello and welcome to SNH! I enjoyed finding out more about you and looking at your horses. I am in love with Commander! What a gorgeous guy.

Are you still doing vaulting? I play around with it sometimes, but only for fun. One of my long-term goals is to be able to canter along with my horse and vault onto his back (not on a longe line) - we'll see how that goes!

Anyway, I'm looking forward to getting to know you! Thanks so much for getting involved.
